The Chinese Academy of Tropical Agricultural Sciences (CATAS) is an agricultural university located in Haikou City, Hainan Province, China. CATAS endeavours various research activities for sustainable rural and agricultural development in the tropical and subtropical China and enjoys high domestic and international reputation. It has 10 research institutes, 1 national key laboratory, 4 ministerial key laboratories, 3 provincial key laboratories, 5 ministerial inspection and testing centers, and 1 analytical and test center. CATAS research activities include: development planning and strategies formulation; collection and conservation of plant resources; environmental protection; breeding and dissemination of improved crop varieties or cultivars; development and recommendation of sustainable farming systems; control of crops pests, diseases and weeds; animal and aquaculture development; development of agro-industrial technology, food processing technology, agro-products processing technology, post-harvest technology for fruits and vegetables, development of farming and processing machinery; new and high-tech development; farm economics; environmental and resource economics; human resource development.
