This flyer illustrates the difference and relationship between capabilities and capacities and introduces the 5 Capabilities approach in capacity development of organisations. The goal of this approach is to assess in a participative way the capabilities of an organisation and to assist in evaluating the changes over time. It is a tool for preparing a future dialogue on improving capacity development. It highlights which capabilities it needs to develop in order to realise the organisation’s objectives.
Mainstream agricultural research has focused primarily on technical and biological aspects and is aimed at controlling or manipulating nature through the use of external inputs, such as
agricultural chemicals or super seed. In developing countries, the results of this research have benefited some resource-rich farmers in well-endowed areas, were suitable to only a limited
extent for poorer farmers in the more favourable areas, and were - in most cases - completely inappropriate for small-scale farmers in marginal areas, e.g. in the mountains or the drylands.
There is increasing evidence that public organizations dedicated exclusively to research and development (R&D) in agribusiness need systematic management tools to incorporate the uncertainties and complexities of technological and nontechnological factors of external environments in its long-term strategic plans. The major issues are: What will be the agribusiness science and technology (S&T) needs be in the future? How to prepare in order to meet these needs?
This sourcebook outlines some of the key tools used by those involved in institutional development. While there are an increasing number of tools and techniques, the focus here is on those that are used or have been used in DFID’s own institutional work.
This presentation from the 2nd Triennial GFAR Conference, held in Senegal in 2003, presents InterSard and InterDev: two cases of partnerships for sharing information and knowledge on good practices and local innovation.
This booklet is the third in the CIAT in Asia Research for Development series. It was based on the experiences of researchers and farmers working with the AusAID-funded Forages for Smallholders Project (FSP) in Southeast Asia from 1995 to 1999. This project was a partnership of smallholder farmers, development workers and researchers who were using participatory approaches to developing forage technologies on farms.
