This video illustrates the goals and work of the Tropical Agriculture Platform (TAP), a G20 initiative supported by the European Union to improve efficiency and effectiveness of capacity development programmes and of knowledge sharing in order to strengthen agricultural innovation systems in the tropics and sub-tropics. The Secretariat of TAP is hosted by the Research and Extension Unit, Office of Innovation, of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations.
The following contents were included in this newsletter (April–June 2014): the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) held a two-day workshop on Engagement of Youth Entrepreneurship for Agricultural Transformation in Africa, from 28-30 May at IITA, Ibadan, Nigeria; cassava processing factory was established at the IITA Kalambo station in DR. In this article, wes developed a quantitative model to compare HT and CF supply chain finance schemes with each other and with traditional, fixed-price delivery contracts, which we identify as Soft Tolling (ST). We make this comparison in the setting of a three-echelon agricultural supply chain, where the third echelon is a large, creditworthy food/beverage manufacturer. This article proceeds as follows: the next section discusses related literature. Section 3 presents our model of an agricultural supply chain and the three specific contract variants (ST, HT, or CF) that we study.
This report is on a Joint Workshop which was held back- to- back with the meeting of the Steering Committee of GFAR and co-organized by GFAR and IICA Secretariats. The aim of this Workshop was to discuss how, in practice, existing capacities could be better mobilized through Collective Actions in agri-food research and innovation, addressing the American Region’s key needs, and how the stakeholders can best contribute to GFAR’s aims in an effective manner.
Livelihoods, food security, and development processes in Sub-Saharan Africa are highly dependent on land management practices to generate natural ecosystem goods and services. Out of a total population of about 717 million people, almost 60 percent depend for their livelihood on agriculture, hunting, fishing, or forestry. However, unsustainable land management already is leading to large-scale land degradation trends, which pose a threat to food security and poverty alleviation in Sub-Saharan Africa. Climate change threatens to exacerbate and add to the existing vulnerabilities.
The paper aims to identify barriers to the development of Learning and Innovation Networks for sustainable agriculture (LINSA). In such networks, social learning processes take place, and knowledge about sustainable agriculture is co-produced by connecting between the different frames and social worlds of the stakeholders with the help of boundary objects. Studying such processes at the interface between different knowledge spheres of research, policy and practice requires a specific methodology.
