The article examines the effect of membership in farmer groups (MFG) on adoption lag of agricultural technologies and farm performance in Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda. We use duration and stochastic production frontier models on farm household data. We find that the longer the duration of MFG, the shorter the adoption lag and much more so if combined with extension service delivery. Farmer groups function as an important mechanism for improving farm productivity through reduced technical inefficiency in input use.

Agricultural Innovation Marketplace - South-South Cooperation Beyond Theory provides a thorough discussion of the creation, the current status, and future of the Agriculture Innovation Marketplace (The MKTPlace), an international, open partnership aiming to contribute to agricultural development in Africa, Latin America, and the Caribbean. Using the recent success of Brazilian agriculture, this partnership seeks to learn from those achievements, financing and organizing projects in other developing countries.

Results from the gender capacity assessment shows, in general, that development and research organizations lack the knowledge and skills to integrate gender into their agricultural programs. Addressing gender-inequity in agriculture will require increased investment in skills and knowledge for value chain actors and enablers.

The CGIAR Research Program on Livestock and Fish aims to increase the productivity of small-scale livestock and fish systems in sustainable ways, making meat, milk and fish more available and affordable across the developing world. This project analyzed the current gender capacities against desired future gender capacities of the Livestock and Fish partners and subsequently designed tailor-made capacity development interventions. 

This gender and social inclusion strategy is designed to support the sustainable and equitable delivery of Bioversity International’s institutional vision and mission. It will promote gender-responsive and socially inclusive practices into all research-for-development practices in the organization, to contribute to narrowing the gender and equity gaps in the management of and benefit sharing from agricultural and tree biodiversity.

This issue of Sustentabilidade em Debate brings together three studies that complement each other with the aim of answering the same question: can the adoption of good management practices for production, conservation of natural resources and working conditions be justified economically? In other words, is the adoption or pursuit of sustainability a good deal for farmers? This question stems from a mismatch between common sense and the experience of Sebrae-MG’s Educampo Program, Rabobank and Imaflora with a large number of farmers.

The Regional Agricultural Development Program-South (RADP-S) aims to improve food and economic security for rural Afghans in the provinces of Kandahar, Helmand, Zabul, and Uruzgan by strengthening the capacity of producers, associations, traders, and agribusinesses to respond to market demands, facilitating lasting market linkages between value chain actors, and supporting an enabling environment that allows the private sector to thrive. 

This report outlines AIIM-Assist activities performed under four components (management of the annual program statement process, building the capacity of AIIM grantees and finalists, technical assistance to other USAID missions in Feed the Future focus countries, technical support to African regional partners outside of AIIM), and highlights qualitative and quantitatvie achievements  between August 6, 2012 and November 4, 2016.

This assessment has been conducted over December 2015 to May 2016 under the Powering Agriculture Support Task Order (PASTO). PASTO is funded by USAID and implemented by Tetra Tech ES, Inc. PASTO provides support services to the Powering Agriculture: An Energy Grand Challenge for Development (PAEGC) and its Founding Partners to enable their effective management, monitoring and evaluation of the program.
