This document summarizes the fifteen projects that were selected by a panel of international experts as those which best represent the technological, institutional and organizational innovations carried out with and by small farmers – known as family farming - in LAC. This is the result of a hemisphere-wide competition organized in 2012 by FONTAGRO, with the aim of (1) showcasing success stories in which innovations having positive economic, social, and environmental impacts have been implemented and, (2) raising awareness regarding the importance of investing in innovation.

Traditional shifting cultivation in the Amazon region has caused negative environmental and social effects due to the use of fire. This type of agriculture has been criticized because it results in emission of large amounts of carbon into the atmosphere and a loss of soil productive potential.

On l’ignore souvent, mais l’agriculture familiale produit l’essentiel de l’alimentation consommée en Afrique de l’Ouest. Or son rôle n’est pas reconnu ni son potentiel soutenu par les politiques publiques.Les chapitres thématiques de cette publication explorent cinq champs d’innovation : « Améliorer la production », « Créer de la valeur par la transformation », « S’organiser pour agir et peser », « Maîtriser les marchés » et « Accéder au financement ».
Si elle ne prend pas en compte le secteur de la transformation qui la connecte aux marchés, l’agriculture vivrière commerciale ne sera pas en mesure de relever les défis de sécurité et de souveraineté alimentaires des pays ouest-africains. Cet article aborde la mise en place d’un projet d’agroforesterie villageoise, pour la gestion intégrée des ressources naturelles, dans le hameau de Duale Mitterrand (52 ménages) situé sur le plateau des Batéké (République démocratique du Congo). Il repose sur un travail de terrain effectué entre février et mai 2012 dans le cadre du mémoire de fin d’études du master en sciences et gestion de l’environnement de l’Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB).
Fin des années 1990 : le Brésil adopte une politique agricole duale fondée sur l’appui à l’agrobusiness et à l’agriculture familiale. Dans ce contexte, l’un des principaux enjeux porte sur la définition d’un modèle agricole destiné à améliorer le soutien à une agriculture familiale longtemps niée par les politiques agricoles successives. Cet article participe à cette réflexion, toujours d’actualité, en discutant les difficultés d’accompagnement de la « modernisation » de ce type d’agriculture.
