African agriculture is currently at a crossroads, at which persistent food shortages are compounded by threats from climate change. But, as this book argues, Africa can feed itself in a generation and help contribute to global food security. To achieve this Africa has to define agriculture as a force in economic growth by: advancing scientific and technological research; investing in infrastructure; fostering higher technical training; and creating regional markets.
El presente documento se elabora de conformidad a lo requerido en los términos de referencia de la Consultoría “Situación de la institucionalidad de apoyo a la innovación comercial de la agricultura familiar y de los procesos de gestión comercial de la agricultura familiar en Chile”, la cual hace parte del Proyecto IICA/FONCT “Innovaciones institucionales para el apoyo a la gestión de procesos comerciales de la agricultura familiar (AF) y su vinculación con los mercados”.
The first phase in the development of the Common Framework on Capacity Development for Agricultural Innovation systems (CD for AIS) consisted of the review of the existing literature, building up a repository of relevant documentation on agricultural innovation in general and AIS and CD for AIS. This report summarizes this first phase. In particular, Section 1 covers this brief introduction. Sections two and three focus on the review of relevant literature, presenting the methodology used and the structure of the repository itself.
Agricultural innovation in low-income tropical countries contributes to a more effective and sustainable use of natural resources and reduces hunger and poverty through economic development in rural areas. Yet, despite numerous recent public and private initiatives to develop capacities for agricultural innovation, such initiatives are often not well aligned with national efforts to revive existing Agricultural Innovation Systems (AIS).

Con el objetivo de confeccionar los planes de fincas a partir de la aplicación de una metodología para tal fin, se realizó una investigación en 25 fincas de los municipios Perico, Martí, Colón y Jagüey Grande (provincia Matanzas, Cuba). Se confeccionó una guía a partir de la metodología de Palma y Cruz (2010), modificada según el contexto cubano, y se capacitó a varios facilitadores que trabajaron con grupos de campesinos, por lo que en la elaboración de los planes se aprovechó los conocimientos de las personas con mayor experiencia.
The objective of this piece of work is to explore innovation support in the case of Greece which is a particular one given the demise, on the one hand, of the country's public extension service in the early 1990's - and since then the absence of any kind of organized extension intervention in the country, and, on the other hand, of the agricultural cooperatives; thus the extremely weak and fragmented nature of the Greek Agricultural Knowledge and Innovation System which seems to be rather unique in the European Union
This report explores the role of rural networks in enhancing innovation processes, questioning the features of the agricultural/rural networks could enhance farmers’ ability to co-innovate in cooperation with other actors. The prospect of this investigation is also to provide interesting and significant experiences that constitute examples for the ‘European Innovation Partnership’ by increasing farmers’ capacities to create, test, implement and evaluate innovations in cooperation with other rural actors.
The report synthesises the research conducted under the PRO AKIS project for the topic "Designing, implementing and maintaining agricultural/rural networks to enhance farmers’ ability to innovate in cooperation with other rural actors".
Este documento trata del nacimiento y actuación de la REAF (Reunión Especializada de Agricultura Familiar) como órgano asesor de los órganos ejecutivos del Mercosur. El documento trata también del reconocimiento de la agricultura familiar como una categoría que requiere de políticas diferenciadas, instalado en el lenguaje a nivel del bloque y de los países que lo integran.
