La conférence sur « Agriculture écologique : atténuer le changement climatique, assurer la sécurité alimentaire et l’autonomie pour les sources de revenus ruraux en Afrique » s’est tenue à Addis – Abéba (Ethiopie) du 26 au 28 novembre 2008.
The aim of this report is to provide a detailed review of documented social learning processes for climate changeand natural resource managementas described in peer-reviewed literature. Particular focus is on identifying (1) lessons and principles, (2) tools and approaches, (3) evaluation of social learning, as well as (4) concrete examples of impacts that social learning has contributed to.
Les ruralités aux Suds sont marquées par une augmentation des flux de personnes et de biens et par des systèmes de mobilités diverses et complexes. Rappelant les raisons qui ont contribué à négliger les mobilités et la pluriactivité dans de nombreux travaux de recherche sur les ruralités aux Suds, l’article propose un modèle d’analyse original, sous le nom de Systèmes Familiaux Multilocalisés, qui permettrait de mieux articuler l’analyse des flux, des liens, et des temporalités mobilitaires, dans les recherches sur les systèmes de pluriactivités développés selon des logiques familiales.
La complexité des facteurs de la migration rurale en ASS rend impossible la prévision du nombre de personnes qui migreront et pourquoi, ni qui elles seront, ni où elles iront. Pourtant, il est possible d’explorer comment ce système complexe de forces interdépendantes pourrait évoluer, de prendre des décisions proactives et d’agir pour construire le futur. Il est peu probable que les migrants ruraux d’ASS soient dans une position favorable pour émigrer hors d’Afrique, ce qui pose un grand défi pour la prospérité future du continent : migration par nécessité ou par choix ?
This paper presents a case study of the Honey Bee Network’s decentralized model for collecting, verifying and disseminating grassroots innovations and provides a roadmap for its replication in Africa. The Honey Bee Network brings together governmental and non‐governmental institutions, members of academia, scholars and a large number of volunteers.
This paper illustrates the Small Stock Innovation Platform, an initiative which is one of the key tangible outcomes of the Strengthening Capacity in Agricultural Research for Development in Africa (SCARDA) program, focused on strengthening capacity in agricultural research systems in selected countries and institutions in all three sub-regions of Sub Saharan Africa.
This paper has been presented at the Fifth International Seminar on Dynamics of Farmer Managed Irrigation Systems: Socio-Institutional, Economic and Technical Context, Kathmandu, Nepal, 25-26 March 2010, organized by Farmer Managed Irrigation System Trust. Given the diversity and context-specificity of innovation systems approaches, in March 2007 the World Bank organized a workshop in which about 80 experts (representing donor agencies, development and related agencies, academia, and the World Bank) took stock of recent experiences with innovation systems in agriculture and reconsidered strategies for their future development. This paper presents findings of an explorative case study that looked at 22 organisations identified as fulfilling an intermediary role in the Kenyan agricultural sector. The results show that these organisations fulfill functions that are not limited to distribution of knowledge and putting it into use. The functions also include fostering integration and interaction among the diverse actors engaged in innovation networks and working on technological, organisational and institutional innovation.
The Farmer Field School (FFS) approach has been very successful and witnessed a strong expansion in many areas beyond crop production. Notwithstanding this success, the adoption of FFS in national extension often remains problematic and FFS activities have often been implemented in the margin of national institutions with strong reliance on donor funding. The creation of an enabling environment for institutional support is essential for expanding the effort, improving quality, and strengthening impact and continuity of the FFSs.
