This brochure presents the UNDP approach to supporting capacity development and the policy statements that UNDP supports. These are backed up by ongoing research and analysis of capacity development theory, methods and applications. The services included are examples of capacity development initiatives that can be supported by UNDP or its partners. This brief summarises the publication ‘Mobilising the potential of rural and agricultural extension’ that was prepared for the Global Conference on Agricultural Research for Development (GCARD) in Montpellier, March 2010. This brief on the session of "Partnerships for livelihood impacts" which was held during the the GCARD Second Global Conference on Agricultural Research for Development (Punta Del Este, Uruguay, 29 October – 1 November 2012), discusses the Empowering Smallholder Farmers in the Markets (ESFIM) programme. ESFIM sought to generate demand-driven research supportive of the policy priorities and activities undertaken by farmers’ organizations that strengthens the advocacy capacities of national farmers’ organisations.
Starting with background information, the report presents a summary of the plenary presentations of the workshop, which includes a brief on the post-conflict and protracted crisis environment in the 15 participating countries (Rwanda, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Congo Brazzaville, Sierra Leone, Burundi, Ethiopia, Uganda, Central African Republic, Chad, Guinea Bissau, Guinea Conakry, Liberia, Afghanistan, and Tajikistan). Some countries like Afghanistan qualified all in one as conflict, post-conflict and protracted crisis country.
The DURAS Project, which ran from 2004 to 2008, established a truly pioneering means of integrating innovation from science with that from communities themselves. At the heart of DURAS has been its innovative competitive grants system. Following an original selection and evaluation process that placed a premium on multi-stakeholder partnerships, 12 projects were funded in Africa and Asia over a period of three years, each involving an array of disciplines and partners.

Impératif de développement et impératif de lutte contre le changement climatique sont plus que jamais liés. Le changement climatique accentue les inégalités en touchant de plein fouet les populations les plus pauvres. En accentuant la vulnérabilité de ces pays, il compromet chaque jour un peu plus leurs chances de se développer. C’est pourquoi, depuis 2007, Coordination SUD1 et le RAC-France ont décidé d’unir leurs forces pour peser davantage sur la position de la France dans le cadre des négociations internationales sur le climat.
Des facteurs structurels expliquent l’insécurité alimentaire en éthiopie : forte croissance démographique, faible productivité des parcelles agricoles, cultures majoritairement pluviales, réseau de communication quasi inexistant, etc. Malgré des moyens et des marges de productivité importants, les politiques agricoles n’ont pas permis de réduire les besoins en aide alimentaire de la population. Chez nous, certains en rêveraient presque … fini le chant du coq à 5h du matin, les odeurs de purin dans les campagnes, les manifestations des producteurs de lait à coup de tracteurs qui bloquent les entrées des villes, et aussi terminé l’argent du contribuable «gaspillé» dans le gouffre des subventions agricoles. D’autres, avec un haussement d’épaules, ne noteraient peut-être même pas la différence.
