Afghanistan-ICARDA programs have field tested a range of rural development approaches and practices. Many of these are ripe for scaling-up at national level and can contribute to the EU-Afghanistan National Priority Programs (NPP) 2017-2021.
The literature reviewed in this document is global in its focus to attend to broad trends in the field and practice of agricultural extension. We do not aim for an extensive literature review but to identify implications for not including gender, ways to do so, and means to move forward. The aim of this report to highlight the importance of gender integration into agricultural extension programs in various parts of the world in order to raise much needed awareness on the subject
The “Partnerships for Improving Pastoral Policies” PIPP project has as its objective to update the Tunisian pastoral law and / or to develop a pastoral code. The approach involves multiple institutional levels that include local communities, national governments and international actors. The engagement of different stakeholders in the negotiation process is recognized and fostered. Furthermore, the approach aims to develop capacities of stakeholders involved.
Providing farmers with essential agricultural information and training in the era of COVID-19 has been a challenge that has prompted a renewed interest in digital extension services. There is a distinct gender gap, however, between men’s and women’s access to, use of, and ability to benefit from information and communication technologies (ICTs).
Livestock have strong empowerment potential, particularly for women. They offer millions of women in the Global South the opportunity to provide protein-rich foods for home consumption and sale. Livestock provide women with income and opportunities to expand their livelihood portfolios and can strengthen women’s decision-making power. Fully realizing livestock’s empowerment potential for women is necessary for sustainable livestock development. It requires, though, that gender-equitable dynamics and norms are supported in rural communities.
Genetic improvement on local breeds kept by small farmers in developing countries is challenging. Even though good pedigree and performance recording is crucial and an important component of breeding programs, it remain difficult or next to impossible under conditions of subsistence livestock farming. This means that standard genetic evaluations, as well as selection and planning of mating based on estimates of the animals' genotypes, cannot be done at any level in the population of the target breed or genetic group.

El presente documento se elabora de conformidad a lo requerido en los términos de referencia de la Consultoría “Situación de la institucionalidad de apoyo a la innovación comercial de la agricultura familiar y de los procesos de gestión comercial de la agricultura familiar en Chile”, la cual hace parte del Proyecto IICA/FONCT “Innovaciones institucionales para el apoyo a la gestión de procesos comerciales de la agricultura familiar (AF) y su vinculación con los mercados”.
Se espera que este plan sea la hoja de ruta, tanto para los líderes locales, como para los funcionarios de instituciones que apoyan el territorio. Aquí podrán encontrar las prioridades identificadas por los actores y las líneas de acción que se deben seguir para alcanzar los objetivos planteados. No está de más señalar que la puesta en práctica de este plan requiere del esfuerzo mancomunado de todos los actores sociales del territorio, así como de toda la ayuda financiera y técnica que puedan prestar los actores institucionales.
Este documento presenta un análisis del contexto macroeconómico y sectorial y de las tendencias y perspectivas para los cultivos, la ganadería, la pesca, los bosques, el bienestar rural y las políticas públicas e institucionalidad del sector. A partir del análisis de las tendencias y las perspectivas, cada capítulo ofrece a consideración de los tomadores de decisiones una serie de recomendaciones que se considera aportarían a afrontar los retos de la dinámica económica mundial y a aprovechar las oportunidades que ofrece.
