El presente artículo describe los resultados de diseminación participativa de semillas (DPS) en términos productivos, ambientales y socioeconómicos en Cuba y México. El concepto de diseminación participativa de semillas (DPS) surgió en Cuba a partir de la integración de las ferias de diversidad de semillas con la experimentación y diseminación de semillas por los campesinos. Una feria de diversidad de semillas es un método donde los fitomejoradores, productores y agentes extensionistas tienen acceso a la diversidad en uno o más cultivos.
In this paper, a novel method to collect symptoms of the disease, as observed by the farmers, using a mobile phone application has been presented. A cumulative composite risk index (CCRI) obtained from more than one existing disease forecast models is validated from the actual late blight queries received from the farmers. The main contribution of the paper is a protocol that combines the symptoms based diagnostic approach along with the plant disease forecasting models resulting in detection of Potato late blight with higher accuracy.
Information and Communication Technology (ICT) development strategy in Chinese rural areas is an indispensable part of national development strategies. This paper reviews the ICT framework in agriculture and rural areas launched by the Department of Agriculture in China. It compares the rural ICT policies and strategies between China and the European Union (EU). The ICT development strategy framework is analyzed based on the situation in Chinese rural area and the experiences of the EU. Some lessons and suggestions are provided
The focus of this research is youth-led innovation, whereby young people instigate potential solutions to a problem, often one that they have identified or defined themselves, and take responsibility for developing and implementing a solution. This report analyses the research to date on youth-led innovation and identifies evidence of impact. It highlights that opportunities to participate in innovation increase young people’s likelihood to innovate in the future and what helps or hinders youth-led innovation.
The balance of debates about innovation systems ideas in agricultural and rural developmentseems to have shifted from conceptualisation and historical analysis to planning and practice. National and international development agencies are now grappling with the need to rethinktheir investments in line with this new perspective. This article adds to the literature about the impact of social networks on the adoption of modern seed technologies among smallholder farmers in developing countries. The analysis centers on the adoption of hybrid wheat and hybrid pearl millet in India. In the local context, both crops are cultivated mainly on a subsistence basis, and they provide examples of hybrid technologies at very different diffusion stages: while hybrid wheat was commercialized in India only in 2001, hybrid pearl millet was launched in 1965.
Until recently, little attention has been paid to local innovation capacity as well as management practices and institutions developed by communities and other local actors based on their traditional knowledge. This paper doesn't focus on the results of scientific research into innovation systems, but rather on how local communities, in a network of supportive partnerships, draw knowledge for others, combine it with their own knowledge and then innovate in their local practices.
The Routemap to Information Nodes and Gateways (RING) is a CIARD project led by Global Forum on Agricultural Research (GFAR). The Routemap consists of a registry of existing information services in agricultural research, innovation and development , indexed and described in a way that makes them more easily "exploitable" for building value-added integrated services.
Pendant des décennies, la faiblesse des investissements publics dans l’agriculture a laissé les agriculteurs extrêmement vulnérables face à l’instabilité des prix, aux crises climatiques et économiques, et sans moyen pour sortir de la pauvreté. Les bailleurs de fonds et les gouvernements doivent concevoir le soutien à l’agriculture comme partie intégrante de la solution à long terme aux crises alimentaires, financières et climatiques.

Esta evaluación tiene como objetivo principal efectuar una valoración sobre el desempeño y el impacto del proyecto, buscando al mismo tiempo generar hallazgos y recomendaciones para futuras operaciones similares en Argentina y otros países. La evaluación servirá además para informar la Evaluación del Programa en el País que será llevada a cabo por la Oficina de Evaluación (OE) en 2009.
