Hacia el fin de la primera década del siglo xxi se han producido en el mundo alimentos más que suficientes para alimentar a una población mundial de cerca de siete mil millones de habitantes. Sin embargo, en los países en desarrollo alrededor de una de cada seis personas todavía padece hambre crónica, lo cual plantea una situación tan terrible, que de ninguna manera puede aceptarse. Este capítulo presenta argumentos en torno a una de las responsabilidades más importantes de la humanidad –la seguridad alimentaria mundial– y sobre los desafíos cada vez más acuciantes que el mundo debe afrontar para alcanzarla, como el cambio climático. Examina, asimismo, la contribución que la innovación en agricultura puede ofrecer para hacer frente a estos problemas y analiza el posible rol de las biotecnologías agropecuarias en este empeño.
