Rising global demand for vegetable oil during the last few decades has led to a drastic increase in the land area under oil palm. Especially in South- east Asia, the oil palm boom has contributed to economic growth, but it has also spurred criticism about negative environmental and social effects. Here, we discuss palm oil production and consumption trends and review environmental, economic, and social consequences in different parts of the world. The oil palm expansion has contributed to tropical deforestation and associated losses in biodiversity and ecosystem functions.

Projet pilote, l’initiative Adaptation Learning Program (ALP) ou Programme d’Apprentissage sur l’Adaptation au Changement Climatique, est mis en œuvre pour une durée de cinq ans (2010-2014) à l’échelle de quatre pays subsahariens : Ghana, Kenya, Mozambique et Niger. Cette phase est conçue et mise en œuvre par Care et ses partenaires dans le but de « Renforcer la capacité des ménages vulnérables en Afrique sub-saharienne à s’adapter à la variabilité et au changement climatique à travers une approche d’adaptation à base communautaire (ABC) ».
Les Champs-Ecoles des Producteurs (CEP) sont une approche d’apprentissage participatif utilisée dans de nombreux différents contextes à travers le monde. Un CEP rassemble un groupe d'agriculteurs, d'éleveurs ou de pêcheurs, dans le but d’apprendre à s'orienter vers des pratiques de production plus durables. C’est un espace d’apprentissage collectif et concret, qui permet aux populations locales d'améliorer leurs compétences en matière d'analyse critique et de prise de décisions.
Le principal message qui est ressorti de la consultation est que l'agriculture familiale apportait une contribution cruciale aux secteurs agricole et halieutique et à la sécurité alimentaire de la région et, qu'à ce titre, les mesures de soutien de cette activité devaient faire partie intégrante de toutes les stratégies de développement de l'agriculture et de sécurité alimentaire.
The organisation of sector and multi-stakeholder consultations was an integral part of the first phase of the PAEPARD II programme, covering the period 2009–2013. These consultations contributed to the overall objective of the programme, the reorientation of scientific and technical collaboration between Africa and Europe in the area of agricultural research for development (ARD), in order to promote thecreation of multi-stakeholder partnerships that are demand-oriented and mutually beneficial.
L’organisation de consultations sectorielles et multiacteurs a fait partie intégrante de la première phase du programme PAEPARD II, qui a couvert la période 2009-2013. This document summarizes the fifteen projects that were selected by a panel of international experts as those which best represent the technological, institutional and organizational innovations carried out with and by small farmers – known as family farming - in LAC. This is the result of a hemisphere-wide competition organized in 2012 by FONTAGRO, with the aim of (1) showcasing success stories in which innovations having positive economic, social, and environmental impacts have been implemented and, (2) raising awareness regarding the importance of investing in innovation.
