Rural food security, subsistence agriculture, and seasonality

Many of the world’s food-insecure and undernourished people are smallholder farmers in developing countries. This is especially true in Africa. There is an urgent need to make smallholder agriculture and food systems more nutrition-sensitive. African farm households are known to consume a sizeable part of what they produce at home. Less is known about how much subsistence agriculture actually contributes to household diets, and how this contribution changes seasonally. We use representative data from rural Ethiopia covering every month of one full year to address this knowledge gap.

Review: Meta-analysis of the association between production diversity, diets, and nutrition in smallholder farm households

Undernutrition and low dietary diversity remain big problems in many developing countries. A large proportionof the people affected are smallholder farmers. Hence, it is often assumed that further diversifying small-farmproduction would be a good strategy to improve nutrition, but the evidence is mixed. We systematically reviewstudies that have analyzed associations between production diversity, dietary diversity, and nutrition insmallholder households and provide a meta-analysis of estimated effects.

Farm Production Diversity and Dietary Diversity in Developing Countries

Enhancing the diversity of agricultural production systems is increasingly recognized as a potential

means to sustainably provide diversified food for rural communities in developing countries, hence

ensuring their nutritional security. However, empirical evidences connecting farm production

diversity and farm-households’ dietary diversity are scarce. Using comprehensive datasets of

market-oriented smallholder farm households from Indonesia and Kenya, and subsistence farmers

Farm production diversity and dietary quality: linkages and measurement issues

Recent research has analyzed whether higher levels of farm production diversity contribute to improved diets in smallholder farm households. We add to this literature by using and comparing different indicators, thus helping to better understand some of the underlying linkages. The analysis builds on data from Indonesia, Kenya, and Uganda. On the consumption side, we used 7-day food recall data to calculate various dietary indicators, such as dietary diversity scores, consumed quantities of fruits and vegetables, calories and micronutrients, and measures of nutritional adequacy.

Environmental, Economic, and Social Consequences of the Oil Palm Boom

Rising global demand for vegetable oil during the last few decades has led to a drastic increase in the land area under oil palm. Especially in South- east Asia, the oil palm boom has contributed to economic growth, but it has also spurred criticism about negative environmental and social effects. Here, we discuss palm oil production and consumption trends and review environmental, economic, and social consequences in different parts of the world. The oil palm expansion has contributed to tropical deforestation and associated losses in biodiversity and ecosystem functions.

Good Practice on Capacity Development for Agricultural Innovation Systems. Building a Sustainable Productive Future.

TAP-related resource

Colombia produces more sugar per month on one hectare of land than any other country. This privilege is due to the productivity of sugar cane grown in the Cauca River valley, where 14 processing plants operate nearly year-round to produce sugar, honey, bioethanol, and electrical energy. The cane is supplied by 2750 growers, owners of 75 percent of the 240 000 hecatres planted, and by the sugar mills themselves (25 percent of the area). The sugar cane chain provides more than 286 000 direct and indirect jobs.

Good Practice on Capacity Development for Agricultural Innovation Systems. Virtual Rural Extension to Challenge Frontiers

TAP-related resource

The problems of family businesses transcend borders, scales, environments, and areas. Within the agricultural sector, family businesses represent 80 percent of the productive units that contribute to the economic development of Argentina and Uruguay. This initiative forms a virtual community where the target audience is the owners, partners, founders, advisors, managers, potential successors, and anyone interested in issues related to the family businesses, without distinction of gender or age, in the agricultural sector of these countries.

Good Practice on Capacity Development for Agricultural Innovation Systems. Alternative Animal Feed and Self-Management Catalyze the Success and Competitiveness of Integrated Farms

TAP-related resource

Food and Nutritional Security (FNS), understood as the availability and access to quality food, is fundamental for human development. The sustainability and progress of the agricultural sector are essential to maintain a food supply in quantity and quality. In the department of Córdoba, multidimensional poverty is twice as high for rural areas (51.9 percent) as compared to urban areas (23.3 percent). Thus, rural producers' role in boosting the local economy, contributing to generating jobs and FNS is essential.
