Rural Advisory Services (RAS) are increasingly recognised as critical to agricultural and rural development. They provide rural communities with wide range of skills and knowledge and facilitate their interactions among the different actors to help them access support and services required for improving their livelihoods. Family Farmers are one of the important clients of RAS as they are the most predominant type of farmers worldwide.
The paper is one of a series of research papers that are designed to timely disseminate research and policy analytical outputs generated by the USAID funded Feed the Future Innovation Lab for Food Security Policy (FSP) and its Associate Awards. The FSP project is managed by the Food Security Group of the Department of Agricultural, Food, and Resource Economics at Michigan State University (MSU), and implemented in partnership with the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) and the University of Pretoria (UP).

Cet article reprend des travaux de prospective réalisés sur l’Afrique de l’Ouest. Il souligne la tendance à l’augmentation de la taille et à la concentration des exploitations agricoles. Selon les auteurs, cette évolution nécessitera pour l’agriculture familiale une transition vers une vocation plus commerciale.
Si elle ne prend pas en compte le secteur de la transformation qui la connecte aux marchés, l’agriculture vivrière commerciale ne sera pas en mesure de relever les défis de sécurité et de souveraineté alimentaires des pays ouest-africains. Tour d’horizon du potentiel du secteur agro-alimentaire et des effets de leviers à activer pour son développement.
