Grants for agricultural innovation are common but grant funds specifically targeted to smallholder farmers remain relatively rare. Nevertheless, they are receiving increasing recognition as a promising venue for agricultural innovation. They stimulate smallholders to experiment with improved practices, to become proactive and to engage with research and extension providers. The systematic review covered three modalities of disbursing these grants to smallholder farmers and their organisations: vouchers, competitive grants and farmer-led innovation support funds.
Little is known about effective ways to operationalize agricultural innovation processes. The authors of this article use the MasAgro program in Mexico (which aims to increase maize and wheat productivity, profitability and sustainability), and the experiences of middle level ‘hub managers’, to understand how innovation processes occur in heterogeneous and changing contexts. Their research shows how a program, that initially had a relatively narrow technology focus, evolved towards an innovation system approach.
Vertical linkages occur among innovation platforms organized at different levels: community, district and national. Horizontal linkages occur among platforms situated at the same level (e.g. in multiple districts) to strengthen their bargaining position or for learning. This brief discusses ways to facilitate learning and problem solving across innovation platforms at different levels (vertical linkages) and between initiatives located at the same level (horizontal linkages). The international workshop on Agricultural Innovation Systems in Africa (AISA) was held in Nairobi, Kenya, on 29–31 May 2013. La innovación, producción y comercialización de un producto resultan de la interacción de una diversidad de actores. Así, el modelo de extensión hub del programa gubernamental MasAgro busca ser un espacio en el que agricultores, extensionistas, proveedores de insumos, instituciones gubernamentales y de enseñanza e investigación, entre otros, interactúen, con el fin de promover bienestar individual y colectivo a través de la innovación.
La presente propuesta de investigación pretende como objetivo generar un modelo metodológico operativo para lograr la competitividad de los pequeños agricultores en condición de pobreza y marginación.
El objetivo de este estudio realizado en el año 2015 fue analizar el nivel de competitividad de 145 unidades familiares distribuidas en los tres estados. Se empleó un cuestionario para la obtención de datos que facilitaron la detección de los factores que han intervenido para tal situación. Se seleccionaron comunidades representativas de los tres estados (Oaxaca, Guerrero y Chiapas) y se recopiló información socioeconómica por medio de cuestionarios como la principal fuente de datos, la cual se complementó con talleres y pláticas informales.
La presente investigación analiza la influencia de las relaciones sociales existentes al interior de un grupo de 22 productores de rambután (Nephelium lappaceum) del Soconusco, Chiapas en 2014. Se analizaron las acciones conjuntas relacionadas con la mejora de la comercialización de su producto. Se empleó la escala de construcción de vínculos relacionales para el trabajo colectivo integrada por los niveles de identificación, aportación, colaboración, cooperación y asociación.
Based on farmer and value chain actor interviews, this comparative study of five emerging dairy clusters elaborates on the upgrading of farming systems, value chains, and context shapes transformations from semi-subsistent to market-oriented dairy farming. The main results show unequal cluster upgrading along two intensification dimensions: dairy feeding system and cash cropping. Intensive dairy is competing with other high-value cash crop options that resource-endowed farmers specialize in, given conducive support service arrangements and context conditions.
Ecological intensification has been proposed as a promising lever for a transition towards more sustainable food systems. Various food systems exist that are based on ecological intensification and may have potential for a sustainability transition. Little is known, however, about their diversity and about how they perform against dominant systems in terms of the multiple societal goals. The aim of this study is to contribute to knowledge about sustainability transitions in food systems through an empirical analysis of vegetable food systems in Chile.
