The Papa Andina network employs collective action in two novel approaches for fostering market chain innovation. The participatory market chain approach (PMCA) and stakeholder platforms engage small potato producers together with market agents and agricultural service providers in group activities to identify common interests, share market knowledge and develop new business opportunities.
This guide has been prepared for use in facilitating and promoting growth in priority sectors already agreed in Decent Work Country Programmes that are based on national priorities owned and led by the constituents (Government and its social partners Employers/Business and Workers). Decent Work Country Programmes are part of national development frameworks focusing on national priorities; they are not ILO programmes.
In the framework of a wide Foresight process, launched by the Standing Committee on Agricultural Research (SCAR) and aiming to identify possible scenarios for European agriculture in a 20-year perspective, DG RTD/E of the European Commission established a high-level Consultancy Expert Group (CEG) that analysed and synthesised foresight information in order to provide research policy orientations, tacking stock of the report from the first Foresight Expert Group (FEG) published in February 2007.
These Proceedings report on the second International Conference of the Convergence of Sciences (CoS) programme in Elmina (2009). The first International Conference was four years earlier in the same location, where it was discussed how to follow up on the findings of the first CoS Programme phase (entitled CoS1 running from 2001 to 2006). The Conference was intended to introduce the focus on “innovation systems”, and how to enhance these systems for smallholder farmers’ development.
The purposes of this course are to review the major reforms being considered internationally that aim to change the policy and institutional structure and operations of public sector agricultural extension systems, and to examine the advantages and disadvantages of each of these reforms as illustrated by the selected case studies. Aside from the introductory chapter, the course is organized into nine modules, which are conceived as part of a larger framework.
The issue of regional differences in development has moved to the center of the development debate in Sri Lanka, partly after the release of regional poverty data. For the past many years, there have been significant and increasing differences between the Western province and the rest of the country in terms of per capita income levels, growth rates of per capita income, poverty rates, and the structure of provincial economies. C’est un pays-continent, planté au milieu de l’Afrique centrale, dont les possibilités agricoles et rurales sont énormes. Les dirigeants de la République démocratique du Congo doivent cependant dépasser une vision extractive de l’économie et renforcer les véritables forces productrices, essentiellement agricoles, tout en sauvegardant le fabuleux patrimoine naturel du pays. En élaborant un Code agricole, le gouvernement congolais affiche l’ambition de se doter de moyens pour relancer l’agriculture, la pêche et l’élevage.
La production et le commerce du lait sont révélateurs des enjeux de la lutte contre la pauvreté. La volatilité des prix du lait sur les marchés internationaux constituerait l’une des principales entraves au développement de filières laitières dans les pays du Sud. Cette année, la production de lait des pays pauvres représentera pourtant 48% de la production laitière mondiale; mais les produits laitiers importés du Nord mettent en difficulté les producteurs locaux.
