The international workshop on Agricultural Innovation Systems in Africa (AISA) was held in Nairobi, Kenya, on 29–31 May 2013. This is the third volume of the proceedings of the national conference on "Water for Food and Environment", which was held from June 9 -11, 2009 at the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall (BMICH). The volumes 1 and 2 have been produced as separate documents of this report series. In response to a call for abstracts, 81 abstracts were received from government institutes dealing with water resources and agriculture development, universities, other freelance researchers and researchers from the International Water Management Institute (IWMI).
Based on international literature, preliminary experiences in a three-country West African research programme, and on the disappointing impact of agricultural research on African farm innovation, the current paper argues that institutional change demands rethinking the pathways to innovation so as to acknowledge the role of rules, distribution of power and wealth, interaction and positions. The time is opportune: climate change, food insecurity, high food prices and concomitant riots are turning national food production into a political issue also for African leaders.

El propósito de este texto es explorar el concepto de sistemas territoriales de agricultura familiar (STAF) en el marco de procesos que promuevan, de manera integrada, iniciativas de desarrollo de nuestros territorios rurales y de fortalecimiento de las agriculturas familiares, en el marco de políticas nacionales articuladas o complementarias entre sí.
De acuerdo con datos recientes, más del 80 % de la población de América Latina se concentra en el medio urbano; sin embargo, la población y la producción de las zonas rurales y el papel que estas desempeñan en el manejo de los ecosistemas y los recursos naturales aún resultan esenciales para el bienestar y el desarrollo de las sociedades latinoamericanas. La producción del sector agropecuario contribuyó con el 5 % del producto interno bruto (PIB) total de la región en 2013, lo que representa casi USD 260 billones en productos.
La Red Agricultura G-20 ha sido una iniciativa conjunta del Instituto Interamericano de Cooperación para la Agricultura (IICA) y la Secretaría de Agricultura, Ganadería, Desarrollo Rural, Pesca y Alimentación (SAGARPA) de México, de cara a la VII Cumbre del Grupo de los 20 (G20). En 2010, sur les 1,2 milliard de personnes extrêmement pauvres, quelque 900 millions vivait en milieu rural.
