The Sourcebook is the outcome of joint planning, continued interest in gender and agriculture, and concerted efforts by the World Bank, FAO, and IFAD. The purpose of the Sourcebook is to act as a guide for practitioners and technical staff inaddressing gender issues and integrating gender-responsive actions in the design and implementation of agricultural projects and programs. It speaks not with gender specialists on how to improve their skills but rather reaches out to technical experts to guide them in thinking through how to integrate gender dimensions into their operations.

In order to realize the potential of agricultural innovation in family farming, national priorities of sustainably increasing food production and productivity, and reducing hunger and poverty, require rural knowledge institutions to be stronger and communication processes to be improved. This brief synthesizes the focus of FAO’s research and extension branch on transforming agricultural innovation systems of member countries.
This book represents the proceedings of the FAO international technical conference dedicated to Agricultural Biotechnologies in Developing Countries (ABDC-10) that took place in Guadalajara, Mexico on 1-4 March 2010. A major objective of the conference was to take stock of the application of biotechnologies across the different food and agricultural sectors in developing countries, in order to learn from the past and to identify options for the future to face the challenges of food insecurity, climate change and natural resource degradation.
For smallholder agriculture to prosper and transform itself, access to rural services is essential. Rural services that enable smallholders to overcome constraints to increase their productivity, manage their farms as a sustainable business, link to inputs and outputs markets and act collectively to improve their livelihoods are a first line of action to reduce rural poverty. Undoubtedly, improving rural services has long been on the development agenda.

La filière présente des potentiels de croissance certains avec un cheptel important, un secteur de la transformation dynamique et des débouchés en forte augmentation du fait de la croissance démographique et de l’urbanisation. Cette filière lait local est cependant aux prises à de nombreuses difficultés internes qui limitent fortement son développement.
Cet article interroge les opportunités et les défis de la demande et de la consommation locales en Afrique de l‘Ouest. Permettre à l’agriculture familiale de bénéficier pleinement de la croissance de la demande régionale nécessitera de travailler davantage sur la structuration des filières, l’aval de la production et le commerce.
Si elle ne prend pas en compte le secteur de la transformation qui la connecte aux marchés, l’agriculture vivrière commerciale ne sera pas en mesure de relever les défis de sécurité et de souveraineté alimentaires des pays ouest-africains. This brochure on Global Knowledge Product provides an update of work carried out in 2020 on the development of some selected strategies, guidelines for the assessment of innovation systems, strategies for promoting agricultural innovation, and knowledge portals for sharing of technologies and good practices that integrate sustainable agricultural production and food security. The development of knowledge products contributes to FAO’s strategic objective of making agriculture, forestry, and fisheries more productive and sustainable.
