Pour faire face à l'augmentation de la population, l'agriculture devra améliorer sa productivité. L'innovation est donc un processus nécessaire. Le progrès technique en représente une part importante, mais ne peut suffire sans une démarche multi-acteurs participative. Les plateformes d'innovation peuvent ainsi favoriser cette démarche de manière pérenne.
FAO and the Centre de Cooperation Internationale pour la Recherche et le Developpement Agricole (CIRAD) organized an expert consultation workshop on developing a methodology for assessing agricultural innovation systems. The meeting was held on 13–15 June 2018 at CIRAD Headquarters in Paris. It brought together 30 experts from academia, research, extension, the private sector, development agencies and government representatives.

Si les outils employés et les thématiques du conseil sont diversifiés, les services demeurent récents et inaboutis. Les prestataires de conseil cherchent en effet à améliorer les outils et services, dont la durabilité n'est pas encore garantie. Ceci s'explique notamment par la complexité du travail inter-organisationnel pour développer ces services.
