In the 90’s first steps were taken in Cuba to strengthen family farming. A participatory seeds breeding, multiplication and diffusion project started, a challenge to Cuban scientists, not used to involve farmers in the decision making process and recognizing them as equal partners. This project further evolved to become the Local Agricultural Innovation Programme, Spanish acronym PIAL (Programa de Innovación Agropecuaria Local).
These presentations have been used during the Committee on World Food Security (CFS) at the side event "Strengthening Agricultural Innovation Systems for Family Farming. Multi-stakeholder processes to develop capacities to innovate for food and nutrition security", held on 17 October 2019.
The side event pointed out that:
- Innovation is the driving force that can transform food systems and lift family farmers out of poverty to help the world achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.

This review explores good practice in multi-stakeholder partnerships (MSPs). Its purpose is to assist the CGIAR in identifying effective practices and strategies in the rapidly evolving context of stakeholders and global development initiatives.
This book collects 24 stories of change from the EU-funded CDAIS project. Launched in 2015, the overall objective of CDAIS is to make agricultural innovation systems more efficient and sustainable in meeting the demands of farmers, agri-business and consumers. The stories are about the eight pilot countries - in Africa, Asia and Latin America - in which CDAIS operates. Depuis quelques années, en Afrique de l’Ouest, les institutions régionales et leurs bailleurs de fonds reconnaissent aux systèmes de stockage alimentaire de proximité un rôle à jouer dans la sécurité alimentaire et dans la régulation des marchés. L’appui aux stocks de proximité, considérés comme la première ligne de défense en cas de crise alimentaire, est explicitement retenu dans la stratégie de stockage de la CEDEAO, de même que le renforcement des capacités de collecte, de stockage et de mise en marché des organisations de producteurs dans une perspective de régulation du marché.
