Micronutrient malnutrition is a public health problem in many regions of the developing world. Severe vitamin A and iron deficiencies are of particular concern due to their high prevalence and their serious, multiple health effects on humans. This paper examines dietary patterns and nutrient intakes, as well as their socioeconomic determinants among households in the Philippines.
In Asia and the Pacific, the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) is working with member countries to leverage breakthroughs in information and communication technologies (ICT) to fight hunger, improve nutrition and counter the effects of climate change and extreme weather events that can devastate farmers and their crops. In the Philippines, a country prone to typhoons, aerial drones are taking to the sky to map out at-risk areas of agricultural land to mitigate risk. This innovative practice is also able to quickly assess damages when a disaster strikes.
The study utilized WFP’s Consolidated Livelihood Exercise for Analyzing Resilience (CLEAR) approach which contains a baseline of major livelihood zones all over the country. CLEAR has provided the backbone to build the Philippines’ first livelihood zone maps which aim to provide information for the diversification of economic activities, aimed to ensure that its food systems are secure, peace and hunger are addressed, and the country is on a continuous path to sustainable development.
The International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) financed the second Cordillera Highland Agricultural Resource Management Project (CHARMP2), in areas where poverty is most severe among indigenous peoples in the highlands of the Cordillera Region in northern Philippines. The aim is to reduce poverty and improve the livelihoods of indigenous peoples living in farming communities in the mountainous project area. The indigenous peoples consist of many tribes whose main economic activity is agriculture.

This Resource Manual on IPPM ALS in Vegetables is a compilation of various documents on the production of commonly grown vegetable crops. This was developed basically for the facilitators and learners of the Children’s Participation in Integrated Production and Pest Management (CP IPPM) Program and the Integrated Production and Pest Management for the Alternative Learning System (IPPMALS) Program. The objective of this resource manual is to provide them a ready reference to complement the learning process in discovery-based IPPM ALS Session Guides that trainers will use in conducting FFS.
Innovation system approach offers an holistic, multidisciplinary and comprehensive framework for analyzing innovation process, the roles of science and technology actors and their interactions, emphazing on wider stakeholder participation, linkages and institutional context of innovation and processes. This paper was aimed to: 1. review the concept of innovation system; 2. appraise the application to agriculture and its relevance and 3. analyze the policy implications for agricultural extension delivery in Nigeria.
The extensive case study on ‘Improving Public Agricultural Extension Services in Bangladesh Using the M4P Approach’ illustrates Katalyst project’s experience in terms of designing interventions in the Local Government Services (LGS) sector, from testing them in small scale towards scaling-up and the accompanying challenges. The case study shows how innovative public-private partnerships create a vast impact on the lives of poor farmers in Bangladesh.
El concepto de innovación inclusiva es una alternativa para analizar la innovación desde una perspectiva tanto desde los estudios de la innovación como del desarrollo. Permite acercarse a sectores como los productores agrícolas. En este trabajo se presenta una propuesta de análisis cualitativo, para un grupo de productores cafetaleros de la zona de Plan de Arroyos, Veracruz.
La extensión es el proceso de intervención de carácter educativo y transformador, cuyo objetivo es el desarrollo económico y social de las familias rurales, a través de servicios de asistencia técnica, intercambio de tecnología, desarrollo de capacidades y capacitación. Este documento muestra como lograr estos servicios.
