In Malawi, FARA involved the Department of Agricultural Research Services (DARS) that engaged an external consultant to undertake the following studies: 1. A situation analysis of agricultural innovations; 2 Programme for Accompanying Research in Innovations (PARI); 2. A scoping study of existing agricultural innovation platforms; 3. A study on National and international investment initiatives on innovation for agricultural development and food and nutrition security.
This report is based on substantive evidence and attempts to provide the kind of analysis that can inform policies, programmes and investments to promote a rural transformation that is inclusive of youth. It examines who rural youth are, where they live, and the multiple constraints they face in their journey from dependence to independence. A distinguishing feature of this report is that it examines rural development in the context of the transformation of rural areas and the wider economy. Opportunities for young women and men begin with a transformation towards a dynamic rural economy.
The case studies reported here form part of ‘GENNOVATE: Enabling gender equality through agricultural and environmental innovation’; a qualitative comparative research to examine the gender dimensions of innovations – new agricultural and natural resource management technologies, institutions, and practices. Despite significant historical, socio-political and environmental differences, the five case studies in East Kalimantan, Indonesia, and the case from southwest Kyrgyzstan exhibit pronounced and rapid changes in the relationship between people and for forests
This report conducted a gender assessment exercise to evaluate if the current solutions/innovations are gender responsive or not. Three innovations were selected that are primarily focused towards Climate Smart Agriculture (CSA) and that had affordability and ease of use as key objectives. The gender assessment embraced a qualitative research approach. This choice was guided by the need to appreciate respondents’ understanding and experiences or perceptions of the different innovations that RAN has been nurturing and developing over the years
This report documents those detailed gender dimensions of root and tuber crops (RTC) farming practices, showing how differently men and women engage in them, and it also provides a critical analysis of the gender considerations required for interventions. There are certain commonalities across field sites in the four countries.
The first section of this paper outlines the effect of gender norms on the productivity and incomes of women in the agricultural sectors of various African countries. The main challenges faced by women in value chains are outlined, including limited land rights, lower education levels and lower financial inclusion, as well as traditional division of labour in the household. These constraints are examined in turn, and their implications in terms of agricultural productivity and earnings are discussed.
El taller tuvo como objetivo el fortalecimiento de capacidades de actores nacionales en la formulación e implementación de proyectos que integren temáticas de género y cambio climático. El taller adoptó un enfoque práctico donde se compartieron diferentes herramientas para ser usadas en las diferentes fases del ciclo de proyectos con enfoque de adaptación y/o mitigación al cambio climático en el sector agrícola para garantizar una visión de género e inclusión social.
El mapeo de actores y organizaciones sirve para representar la realidad institucional del territorio. Se utilizaron métodos de investigación cualitativos como observación, entrevistas abiertas semiestructuradas y grupos focales. Los métodos de investigación cualitativos apuntan a reconocer a las personas como sujetos de investigación y no objetos, valorando sus saberes, vivencias, experiencias. Así mismo, consideran la subjetividad e identidades para la transformación-cultural-evolutiva, que se precisa para llegar a la equidad e igualdad de género.
Este diagnóstico de capacidades de género se realizó para identificar cuáles son las capacidades de género existentes en los socios de LAF en Nicaragua, en sus zonas de intervención. Los resultados permitirán formular respuestas adecuadas de desarrollo de capacidades de género para incrementar la habilidad de los diferentes socios del programa, para que de manera efectiva y eficiente, puedan desarrollar funciones, resolver problemas, así como establecer y lograr objetivos con enfoque de género.
The literature reviewed in this document is global in its focus to attend to broad trends in the field and practice of agricultural extension. We do not aim for an extensive literature review but to identify implications for not including gender, ways to do so, and means to move forward. The aim of this report to highlight the importance of gender integration into agricultural extension programs in various parts of the world in order to raise much needed awareness on the subject
