In order to realize the potential of agricultural innovation in family farming, national priorities of sustainably increasing food production and productivity, and reducing hunger and poverty, require rural knowledge institutions to be stronger and communication processes to be improved. This brief synthesizes the focus of FAO’s research and extension branch on transforming agricultural innovation systems of member countries.
Este folleto presenta el Programa estratégico para “Reducir la Brecha Digital en el Medio Rural”, implementado en 2003 por la Organización de las Naciones Unidas para la Alimentación y la Agricultura (FAO). El programa destacó enfoques novedosos para el intercambio de información, que aprovechaban de nuevas (en ese tiempo) tecnologías digitales, y se basaban en sinergias entre la gestión de información y la comunicación para el desarrollo. En ese momento este proceso se llamaba "Información y Comunicación para el Desarrollo" (ICD).
La seguridad de la tenencia es un requisito previo importante para la gestión forestal sostenible. La diversificación de los sistemas de tenencia podría proporcionar una base para mejorar la gestión de los boques y los medios de vida locales, especialmente cuando la capacidad de gestión forestal del Estado no es suficiente.
This regional workshop was designed to strengthen the capabilities of representatives of NIFUs for analyzing the situations of their NAIS, and to use their national experiences to identify strengths, weaknesses, and threats/challenges affecting seven key areas influencing development of NAIS, namely: (i) strategy/policy, (ii) institutional aspects, (iii) stakeholders, (iv) content, (v) people, (vi) infrastructure, and (vii) financial aspects. Possible solutions for the key weaknesses and threats /challenges were defined by participants.

La sécurité de la tenure est une condition essentielle à la gestion durable des forêts. La diversification des systèmes de tenure pourrait servir de base à l’amélioration de l’aménagement forestier et des moyens d’existence locaux, en particulier là où l’Etat ne dispose pas des moyens suffisants pour gérer les forêts. Au cours de la dernière décennie, de nombreux pays ont entamé des efforts de réforme de leurs systèmes de tenure forestière, en déléguant certains droits d’accès et de gestion aux ménages, aux sociétés privées et aux communautés.

This book collects 24 stories of change from the EU-funded CDAIS project. Launched in 2015, the overall objective of CDAIS is to make agricultural innovation systems more efficient and sustainable in meeting the demands of farmers, agri-business and consumers. The stories are about the eight pilot countries - in Africa, Asia and Latin America - in which CDAIS operates. FAO has been promoting the use of ICTs in agriculture and has focused on ICT innovation for improving agricultural production and enhancing value chains. This publication is an effort to share success stories on the use of ICTs for agriculture and rural development. This publication showcases a few case studies where innovative use of emerging technologies together with capacity development has brought about rich dividends.
